Moving is considered one of the most stressful times in a person’s life, so it’s only imaginable what this can do to children. When you’re gearing up for a major relocation, remember that your kids are also going through the event with you. If at all possible, it’s best to move after the school year has finished. This makes it much easier on children, since moving schools in the middle of the year can be rather difficult. While young children may be a little bit confused about the relocation, most of them can cope with it better than older kids. Pre-teens and teenagers often have the hardest time dealing with a move since they are leaving friends behind. A good way to cope with this is to sit down as a family and make a list of things to look forward to. Think about the features of your new home and neighborhood and try to focus on the positive aspects of it.
When you are planning your relocation, make sure to get the kids involved. Let them help plan and execute a garage sale, box up items, and make lists. The more involved they feel the more comfort they will experience and they will get a sense of teamwork. Making sure the children know that you are all in this together as a family provides a lot of comfort. For younger children, it’s important that they be allowed to keep some of their favorite toys with them on the day of the move so they will feel comforted. While relocation is difficult, for older kids, remind them that their friends are still reachable by phone and email. This can help them feel that they are not completely severing ties with their old friends. While moving can be difficult, everyone will eventually adjust and enjoy their new home and new place to live.
